SUMMARY:Internship Spotlight: Azul Garcia
DESCRIPTION:Summer intern Azul Garcia joins us from the University of Rochester’s Schwartz Community-Based Internship Program. Azul studies psychology and legal studies at the University of Rochester. Between giving tours of the Anthony House\, Azul has been working on a special research project entitled\, “The History of Hysteria: Women’s Mental Health in the 19th and 20th Centuries.” \nThe purpose of this presentation is to understand how mental health issues were addressed during a time when women had limited rights and autonomy. The 19th and 20th centuries were an extremely formative period for women. Many women’s movements took place during this time\, coming in waves that targeted suffrage\, labor and workplace rights\, bodily autonomy\, and access to education. Recognizing the sexism embedded in the improper practices used to diagnose serious mental health issues during these centuries is the first step toward understanding and addressing the disparities women have faced in accessing mental health services\, both then and now.

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Roots: The Origins of the Women's Rights Movement
DESCRIPTION:The 1848 Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls\, New York\, ignited a social movement for civil rights\, human rights\, and equality that challenged the traditional place of women in American society. Rooted in abolitionist activism\, Quaker reform efforts\, and grassroots organizing\, the convention established a framework for what would become the women’s rights movement in the United States. It also marked the beginning of a long campaign to achieve equal rights and expand women’s role in American public life. \nMolly Jessup is the acting Interpretation & Education manager at the Women’s Rights National Historical Park and the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park\, part of the National Park Service.

SUMMARY:Place Precarity and the 19th Century Woman
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the long-nineteenth century\, women of color\, ethnic minorities\, economically disadvantaged and working class women\, women living in certain religious communities\, and aging women often experienced marginalization and social injustice. Women scientists were also expected to take a subordinate role while working alongside men\, who often received recognition for the scientific discoveries women made. “Place Precarity & the Nineteenth-Century Woman” will draw upon several rare\, unpublished\, and out-of-print texts composed between 1775 and 1925 that will highlight the social insecurities\, economic and work-related uncertainties\, and political instabilities many women faced during this period.  \nJillmarie Murphy is the William D. Williams Professor of Literature\, Neuroscience\, and Women’s & Gender Studies at Union College\, Schenectady\, NY. She has written nine books and several journal articles that employ psychology and neuroscience to consider literary representations of gender\, race\, class\, and ethnicity. She recently published a 4-volume collection on Women and the Environment in the Long-Nineteenth Century and is currently working on a new book project that examines the neuroscience behind human-nonhuman animal attachments in naturalist fiction\, and a journal article that investigates the neurobiology of in utero/ex utero famine trauma.

SUMMARY:Tense Threads: Exploring the Effectiveness of ‘Craftivism’ From Suffragists to Social Media
DESCRIPTION:What is ‘Craftivism’ as a contemporary force\, and what are its historic threads? This talk will start in the present day and will share examples of craft-based political actions on issues ranging from fighting against gender violence\, immigration hostilities and climate degradation. We will then travel back in time to explain its antecedents\, as well as tensions in the Suffragist movement relating to the utility of domestic craftwork. Participants are welcome to bring craft works-in-progress to share and work on during the talk. \nHinda Mandell is a professor in the School of Communication at RIT in New York. Mandell is editor of Global Craftivism since the Pussyhats: Handcraft Responses to Violence\, War\, Illness and Isolation (Bloomsbury 2026); author of Crafting Choice: Abortion Politics and Handwork in the U.S. (Bloomsbury 2026); editor Crafting Dissent: Handicraft as Protest from the American Revolution to the Pussyhats (Rowman & Littlefield\, 2019); co-curator and co-editor of Crafting Democracy: Fiber Arts and Activism (RIT Press\, 2019); and a co-editor of Nasty Women and Bad Hombres: Gender and Race in the 2016 US Presidential Election (University of Rochester Press\, 2018). Since 2017\, she has organized maker interventions on issues of social reform tied to geographic place reaching 2\,000 craft participants. She’s been interviewed by The New York Times and The Associated Press\, among other global outlets\, on the importance of making objects by hand. She is on Instagram: @crochetactivism.
