Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass were two of the most powerful voices for voting rights for all citizens in the United States.  They believed we must be a nation “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” They believed the vote is the means to shaping a more just society with a government that serves the needs of all of the people.

With these two icons at the forefront and as the home to many other courageous suffrage leaders, Rochester claims the identity: “Suffragist City.” We celebrate our heritage by encouraging full participation in our democracy, inspired to continue to work for liberty, equality, and justice for all humanity.
